The most important thing is to write impactful and measurable SLOs at the appropriate level. For example, A PhD, EDD, or EDS program should provide doctoral-level SLOs that require certain skills expected of doctoral graduates.
Resource:
- The National Institute on Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) website provides very helpful resources. Click here: New to Assessment and scroll down to “Writing Learning Outcomes.” Programs should also conduct internet searches to see how similar programs are writing their SLOs.
The Office of Assessment advises against deleting SLOs. Instead, SLOs no longer in use should be hidden.
Hiding SLOs
- Open the Student Learning Outcome section.
- Click the green CHECK OUT button.
- Click Hide for outdated SLOs, then confirm in the popup window.
- To restore an SLO if a mistake was made, click Show.
Creating New SLOs
- Click Create New Set, provide a title, and click Continue.
- Scroll down and select Create New Outcome.
- Enter the SLO number and description (e.g., "SLO1: Students will…").
- Click Add another outcome if needed.
- Select Back to all outcome sets, then click Continue.
- Ensure each SLO is introduced, reinforced, and assessed within the curriculum.
- Avoid forcing a fit—only map courses where alignment exists.
- Enter required courses in the order that students are expected to complete them.
Steps:
- Click the green CHECK OUT button.
- Select Create a New Curriculum Map, enter a title (e.g., "Psychology BA Curriculum Map"), and click Select Assignment.
- Click OK in the popup window to proceed.
